Aphekom, a European research group, found out that the monetary health benefits from complying with the WHO guideline would total some €31.5 billion annually, including savings on health expenditures, absenteeism and intangible costs such as wellbeing, life expectancy and quality of life. New research consistently points to the dire health effects generated by air pollution such as premature births, cognitive development disorders, heart conditions, loss of work days due to poor indoor air quality and many other negative effects upon human wellbeing. Furthermore, air pollution damages agriculture and the natural forest. Over the years multiple studies have shown alarming figures of crop loss, up to 10%, due to air pollution.
In spite of the severe outcomes, communities, families and individuals do not have the basic information about their own exposure to air pollution. We believe that reliable information concerning the level of exposure to the different air pollutants is a basic right and would enable legislators, local authorities, NGO's and most notably concerned parents, as to their most suitable response to this risk, making adequately informed choices.
AirBase Solution, AirBase Systems is an early stage Israeli start-up aimed at developing a cheap and affordable air quality sensor networks. The sensors can be used indoors and outdoors. This sensor-unit price is a market breaker given the current cost of an air monitoring unit being at least 20 times higher. As for October 2011 we already have an operational network of 30 sensors (in the city of Berlin with 3.5 million people there are only 17 sensors).
In the spatial application, the sensors are connected via the Internet onto a city-wide or country-wide network. This network continuously gauges air contaminants information. With this deployed network, Airbase will aggregate data, analyze it and deliver alerts through a friendly user interface in a variety of channels and forms, including the internet (open GIS), mobile devices and apps. The operating cost varies according to the size of the network.
Airbase's revolutionary patent pending technology will enable its users to become far more aware of the quality of the air they inhale and will equip its users with the practical tools to protect their health.
Our system is currently equipped to measure levels of Ozone, CO, NOx, VOC, dust, noise, relative humidity and temperatures. The highly compact sensors are stored in a "home router" like box that is simply powered-in and hooked to the LAN plugs (or Wi-Fi) of the internet router - just plug & play. Immediately after it is connected, the sensors are operative, sending a pulse of information every 20 second. Any deviation from the allowed (or inputted) exposure standard will generate an immediate alert.
A multi billion market humanity is ever more urban, with last year's turning point where for the first time over 50% of mankind resides in cities. Intelligent cities are the sustainable way of managing the environmental, sanitation and health-related aspects of such an enormous mass. A deployed sensors network will be a key component in aggregating air quality data from the city, providing the basis for any sound decision making. ABI research estimates that current Smart Cities market is 8 billion USD, with that market demand multiplying itself fivefold over the next 5 years possibly reaching 40 billion USD in 2016. Air Pollution is playing a key role in this market and we will be a part of it.
